Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Tree

"It probably wouldn't have hurt them to have moved this marker to the lawn ... or on the other side of the tree ... on even onto the sidewalk itself! Apparently, it would have, and that's why they didn't. #81 suffers from yet again, one of the most ridiculous placements in the entire system." -- September 2007

Notes: If you find the streets confusing around this neighborhood of Reno, you're not the only one. This squat little marker sits right across from the campus of the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) as hidden as could be!

The streets and neighborhoods surrounding UNR are trodden with pedestrian traffic ... and this is a good thing for you because the only way to conquer this one is with your own two feet. Although Marker 81 is fairly easy to find, the test is actually spotting the marker from the curb. Then, comes the added issue of parking. Your best bet is to park a block away at Ninth Street Park, a half-block east of the marker. From here, walk west back to Ninth Street. Parking in the lot right next to the marker is strictly prohibited without a campus parking permit and is subject to fine. Don't test it!

Here's what you'll see!

Exact Description:
This tree was planted in soil from Civil War battle fields and dedicated to the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic by the National Commander in Chief June 10, 1913.

Can you see the visibility dilemma here? A better spot for this marker would've been on the lawn directly behind the tree, or on the sidewalk at the intersection.
